MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT
Mental health treatment is a critical component of a Community Support System. Persons with mental illness can usually benefit from the provision of appropriate medication and/or supportive counseling services. Each person may need a different type or degree of service. Community mental health treatment is most often delivered in two basic settings: outpatient facilities and partial hospitalization programs.
Many agencies listed in this directory act as referral sources to connect sources to connect people with mental health services.  The crisis units of both Counties provide outreach services routinely. Community agencies or interested individuals may call Lehigh and Northampton Counties intake offices (listed under Outpatient Services) or the 24 hour emergency/crisis numbers below:

OUTPATIENT SERVICES
Outpatient services may include psychiatric evaluation, medication monitoring, and counseling or therapy. Again, individual needs for each of these services and the availability of the services will vary. For people who have no insurance coverage and are are eligible, both Counties provide outpatient services and/or contracted with outpatient providers to do so. You can reach these services through the counties’ intake unit listed here, as well as the other service providers:

PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION PROGRAMS
Sometimes people need more than an office visit with a doctor and/or therapist to help them remain in the community. A more intensive setting in which you can receive psychiatric treatment is a partial hospitalization program. These are typically programs where you spend six hours a day in group counseling situations. Usually, the program also has a psychiatrist who will follow your medication needs. There are a variety of partial hospitalization programs in the Lehigh Valley. Some of them are specific to particular groups, like persons with mental illness and substance abuse problems. Some are time-limited and many of them offer lunch and transportation. You can check with the programs below to find out more information:

HEALTH & DENTAL CARE
While finding private doctors willing to take Medical Assistance is difficult, several Lehigh Valley hospitals provide full outpatient medical services, including Endocrinology, Surgery, Neurology, and other Clinics for low-income persons. If you have no insurance and are not eligible for medical assistance, most of the area hospitals provide low cost care on a sliding-fee scale, depending upon your income. Some of the hospitals call this a “Hill-Burton” program. You can call the following hospital clinics and explore whatever assistance may be available to you with the financial offices.
