GROUP HOMES/APARTMENTS
Group homes and apartment programs are available for persons with mental illness in the Lehigh Valley. Group homes are designed as regular homes where people live while receiving extra support services and supervision to maintain life in the community. You live with other people with mental illness, sharing household responsibilities and tasks. Most group homes have staff available 24 hours a day. Rents are based on your income. In an apartment program, you would share an apartment with one or more individuals and staff may be available for a specific amount of time per day. To get into a group home or apartment program, you must be involved with the MH/MR Office in the County where you live. Your County Caseworker will help you decide if this type of program is right for you. The following list of organizations provides group homes and apartment programs in the Lehigh Valley.

 PERSONAL CARE HOMES
These programs provide 24 hour supervision, meals, laundry service, medication monitoring, and some assistance with personal hygiene. Usually, you receive a small allowance from your SSI check and the remainder goes to the home. These can be helpful places for those people who do not wish to live alone, or have difficulty with day-to-day living. Some personal care homes in the area which assist people with mental illness are listed below.

EMERGENCY SHELTERS
There may be times when you need a safe place to keep you off the street or out of a dangerous homeless situation, until you can find a better place to live. That is the purpose of an emergency shelter. Most of the shelters in the Lehigh Valley provide a bed, food and support services, like case management, counseling and training to help you find more permanent housing. Each shelter has its own criteria for admission and sometimes there are waiting lists to get in. The names, addresses and phone numbers of Lehigh Valley shelters are listed here so you can get further information.

PUBLIC HOUSING
Each of the major cities (Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton) and both counties (Lehigh and Northampton) have a public housing office. These offices are responsible for some low income housing projects. You can have your name placed on the waiting list for these projects if you qualify. If you live in one of the major cities, you are most likely to get on the list for the existing housing projects in the city where you live. If you reside anywhere else in either county, you can go to the appropriate county housing authority office. All of the local housing authorities are listed here. They each have their own days and times to receive applications, so call first.
